Luke 4:24-26
“Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.”
Observation
There were many “good things” that Jesus could have done during his time on earth–but only a very few things that he was sent to do. There were many widows affected by the famine in Elijah’s day, but only one to whom he was sent. There were many “good opportunities”, but only a very small number of “God opportunities” (…as James B. likes to say)
Application
As I follow Christ, there will be many “good” doors and opportunities that will appear…like being offered a GM position at the resort, mere weeks before God opened the door to step in as Campus Pastor at NHL. These opportunities may not have anything wrong with them, except one thing: God didn’t call me to do that! These things are good opportunities, but not “God opportunities”. In order to follow God’s leading, I have to be able to say “no” to everything else, so that I can say “yes” to God.
Prayer
God, thank you for guiding my steps! Help me to clearly hear your voice, and discern the difference between the “good opportunities” and the “God opportunities” to which you have called me, so that your plans would be accomplished in me.
