Scripture
Obadiah 1:3-4
“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘who can bring me down to the ground?’ Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down,’ declares the Lord.”
Observation
The imagery is fascinating here. God told Moses to hide in the cleft of the rock, and God is often symbolized as the rock on which we stand. Scripture also speaks of God giving us strength to rise on wings like an eagle. The Edomites were descendants of Esau, and thus from Abraham’s lineage. The problem with Edom is that they became full of pride. Though planted on a rock, they chose to focus on their own strength. Though soaring high on wings like an eagle, they neglected to glorify the one who had given them wings.
Application
God blesses me generously. He has given me a strong foundation, and wings like an eagle to rise above the attacks of the enemy. I can be confident in the provision and protection of God–but I cannot allow myself to forget who the rock is, and who gives me wings. My strength to stand does not come from me, but from the one who loves me. This week, I need to remain confident in Christ. Though attacks and storms come, he remains unshakable.

Pride makes me unstable no matter how strong my foundation. Christ keeps me secure, no matter how strong the storm.
Prayer
God, thank you for being my rock and my foundation! Thank you for being unshakable. Help me to always keep my trust in you, and not in my own strength.

“He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
Which shadows a dry thirsty land
He hideth my life in the depths of His love
And covers me there with His hand”
